The fact that our libidos ebb and flow is the topic of dozens of articles on this blog, and millions worldwide. It’s an established fact and something that we all deal with and process differently. There are too many causes to count – it can be down to external or internal forces, or physiological or psychological processes, or any combination of those, and many others besides.
While we have to accept, to an extent at least, that our libidos are occasionally beyond our direct control, there are some things we can do to offer our bodies the best chance it can have for a healthy sex drive. One of those things is our diet.
While there’s little evidence to suggest that our libido issues can be solved through food alone, there’s plenty to show its benefits for overall energy level, mood, fitness level, and general health and wellbeing. All of these directly contribute to our sexual wellness, and impact our sex drive.
Here’s a list of several common foods that we can add to our diet to stimulate our libido, and hopefully reinvigorate our sex drives.
Black Raspberries
Black raspberries, more than most berries, are rich in phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are naturally occurring, plant-based compounds that act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and inhibiting their power to create damage. This is very useful for the healthy production of the chemicals required for sexual arousal.
Pine Nuts
L-arginine is an amino acid used in the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide facilitates the flow of blood to the erectile tissue of the genitals during sexual arousal. It’s also the most common amino acid found in sexual supplements and erection pills. It’s present in high quantities in pine nuts.
Avocados
Avocados are packed with fats that are good for the heart and circulation, as well as vitamin B6 and folic acid. Through these, avocados are known to promote hormone production, particularly in men, which is key for a strong sex drive.
Watermelon
This delicious and refreshing fruit is packed with citrulline, which is converted into arginine in our bodies. As you’ll remember from the bit about pine nuts, arginine is the most common ingredient of most sexual supplement, including the most famous one. By relaxing the blood vessels, arousal and sexual pleasure are more easily achieved.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Olive oil enhances circulation. It’s that simple. Extra virgin olive oil is loaded with various health benefits which help prevent heart disease and various cancers, but more to the point for this article, ensure healthy blood flow to our erogenous zones for more satisfying sex and desire.
Of course, none of this means much without regular exercise and good care of our psychological health. There’s no magic bullet or pill for libido, it’s a confluence of forces. But with the right balance of exercise and diet, you’ll be in a strong position to revitalize your sex drive.
